Artificial Bait

I Love to fish with lures. I used to fish with live baits but have found lure fishing to be a more exciting process, or perhaps its the fact that I have an issue sitting still for too long when the fish aren’t biting.

At any rate the cast and retrieve of lure fishing is tension reducing and calming. Switching lure colors, styles, and location all come into play as the day progresses. Different structure, lighting, and temperature calls for adjustments in the lure and the cast and retrieve process. All of the changes are to get the predator fish to think that the lure is prey.

When the fish is tempted it starts to look at the lure, as it becomes enticed it begins to think how good that object appears to be and that it must partake of it and eat it. Then yank, the hook is set and the fish is caught; it is being taken where it doesn’t want to go. It struggles and fights but there is no use and the fish is taken away and killed as a meal for the fisherman.

Much like the fish, we are looked at as prey by the enemy of our souls, he would like to devour us…

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter‬ ‭5:8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

How can Satan achieve this in our lives?

“Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.” James‬ ‭1:14-15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

You see, Satan is a crafty enemy and he studies us just as a fisherman will study the environment to pick the correct lure. Satan understands our weaknesses and where there may be a crack in our armor. That is where he will attempt to lure us away, a temptation for one person may not be a temptation for another. He will change tactics all the time to cast a lure in front of us as temptation, hoping to get an enticing reaction, and then he pauses waiting for our enticement to mature into sin. Then bang we are being pulled where do not want to go…

“I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.” Romans‬ ‭7:15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

However, we do not have to live this way. God also knows our weaknesses and knows how the enemy works…

“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭10:13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Also, God does not hold our past against us and He wants to see us succeed.

“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.” Romans‬ ‭8:1-2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? … No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans‬ ‭8:35, 37-39‬ ‭NLT‬‬

So let us stay sharp in our pursuit of holiness and not fall prey to the many wiles of the devil. Let us be strong in power of God’s might, steadfast in our assurance that He loves us exceedingly more than we can imagine and that He holds us in His hands. If we are tempted…listen for God’s voice and allow Him to alter our thoughts to change our direction, He is faithful in performing this task, we must be willing to submit and obey.

Be blessed.
