Oh the warmth of the covers on a cold night. I know they are cold when you first pull them over but once you are in them they get nice and warm. You notice this when you get up in the night and then return to the bed. Or if, like me your spouse works most of the night so their side of the bed is not warm but yours is.
Or how about a throw cover just to cut the chill while sitting in your favorite chair this time of year. Isn’t it odd that we would actually feel the chill with our modern heating equipment (if it is functioning that is). I mean 68 degrees should be fine but we still get a little chill.
When we were children the covers offered protection from whatever was in the closet or under the bed. Pull them up over your head and just focus on going to sleep…if I can’t see them, they can’t see me. Or the flashlight under the covers so Dad and Mom wouldn’t know that I was still awake.
Covers are some awesome things.
However, when we come to the Lord and start our Christian walk our lives are laid bare to the Lord. Actually they always were that way to the Lord, but now we are convicted over this and that and repent. Christ living in us points out our spiritual deficits in different areas of our lifestyle and we are directed to clean it up as we become more like Him.
However covers (or at least the term) is part of our walk with Christ. We must not judge our brothers and sisters but love them, as Peter wrote… “Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8 NLT, many times this verse is thought of as God covering our sins. But I think it is saying that if we truly love a brother we will ignore the wrongs (sins against us) and continue to show steadfast agape love to them, God will work on them and create a change. After all God is the only one who can really change a person.
So at salvation we have knowingly uncovered our lives before the Lord and asked Him to change us and mold into His image. At the same time we join a spiritual family that should walk in love as the Spirit enables with the first fruit of the Spirit.
Lord, show me where I fall short of your perfect image in my life. Convict me of wrongs and intentions that are not appropriate for my walk. Create in me an abundant agape love for all people to keep me from trying to do your job as judge. Amen.
