A grasp of knowledge about a certain topic. An agreement between parties. How do we achieve understanding or come to an agreed upon understanding? We gather understanding through study, teachings, and experience.
Study
“I will pursue your commands, for you expand my understanding.” Psalms 119:32 NLT
“For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:6 NLT
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
Teachings
“Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more.” Proverbs 9:9 NLT
“Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” Psalms 119:18 NLT
“The godly offer good counsel; they teach right from wrong.” Psalms 37:30 NLT
“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.” Ephesians 4:11 NLT
Experience
This is the school of hard knocks and such. We learn to not touch something hot because it hurts. We learn how to ride a bike by falling down. We learn how to act by misbehaving. All of these life occurrences and many more give us experience in the way we live our lives.
There are spiritual experiences as well. The more we study and listen to good teaching on spiritual matters the more our spirit man grows and habits towards God and His ways expand. What is good study and teaching you might ask. It must be scripture based and line up with all of the other scripture. In other words it must be taken in context and supported by contextual statements in other parts of scripture (2 Timothy 3:16).
Let us study, listen to sound doctrine, and work towards a deeper spiritual experiential life with Christ.
